Description
Septarian Geode with sparkly Barite crystals from Veynes, Haute Alpes, France 🇫🇷
This rare piece features a Septarian geode half that is polished with an open interior showing fine sparkling Barite crystals within. The name Septarian is derived from the Latin word " septum", meaning partition, and refers to the divisions or cracks that are typical of this sort of rock. They are generally formed in calcium rich clay which then hardens to form this type of limestone nodule, with the dark grey exterior. Over many years, the rock contracts, giving rise to cracks, later becoming filled with water. Calcite crystals slowly then formed in the center. This specimen of French barite has excellent form and beautiful subtle crystallization features.
