Agatized Colus Fossil PM0512

Description

Colus fossil is a unique, ancient gemstone formed from the remains of prehistoric marine snails (gastropods) that lived roughly 200 to 250 million years ago. Over vast stretches of time, the organic composition of the snail's shell was gradually replaced by silica minerals, a geological transformation known as agatization.

They originate from ancient sea creatures belonging to the Colus genus of marine gastropods.
The original shell is replaced by a combination of chalcedony, quartz, and sometimes gold-flecked pyrite matrix.
Because the mineral replacement happens slowly at a molecular level, the stone perfectly preserves the cross-sections, swirls, and chambers of the original snail shell.
